According to sources from the Jiangsu Intellectual Property Protection Center, in 2025, Jiangsu ranked second in terms of the number of invention patents granted (116,900) among all provinces and municipalities in China. The number accounted for 12.95% of the national total. Among them, the number of invention patents granted to enterprises reached 86,300, accounting for 73.79% of the total in the province, demonstrating enterprises' leading role in innovation. Universities and research institutions were granted 25,300 and 3,300 patents, respectively, accounting for 21.66% and 2.83% of the province's total, serving as important explorers of basic research and frontier technology.

When it comes to the fields of the granted invention patents, Jiangsu exhibits a distinctive feature: Technological innovation empowers industrial development. The patents in six major fields including computer technology, electrical machinery, electrical apparatus, and electrical energy account for over 50% of the total, which are not only key areas for national invention patent grants in 2025 but also core segments of Jiangsu's high-end manufacturing and green low-carbon industries. Among them, the patents in computer technology support the deep integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data with the real economy; the strong patent portfolio built up in fields like electrical machinery and electrical apparatus underpins major breakthroughs in industries related to new energy and high-end equipment; and patents in chemical engineering provide technical support for industries such as biopharmaceuticals and new materials, further consolidating the core competitiveness of industries in Jiangsu.
